Ruthless Oath by Ella Jade is book 1 of the Cruel Empire Series. It's my first by this author and I think it's a promising start.

The book has kept my attention with the tense banter between Marchello and Lissia. They have this charged chemistry with their banter, sparring, baiting and sometimes volatile relationship. You can definitely feel the sizzle between these two. They feed off of each other and relish one "upping" each other constantly.

Lissia is strong and willful that gets her in too much trouble. She has a childlike response to strife and conflict and reacts before thinking things through. Marchello is dominant, structured and overpowering. He has his hands full with Lissia.

The story is interesting and kept me reading along. I'm curious to see what happens in the next book. I do hope that Lissia's inner child personality changes as the story grows and she acts more like an adult instead of a petulant child. She has her moments and is well meaning... I look forward to seeing her character growth in the next book. Marchello can be a bit over bearing but right now, I understand the reason for it.

Overall, I enjoyed the story.
